I am currently teaching the following courses.
Platforms for Networked Communities. Interuniversitary Master in Telematic Engineering.
Scientific Reasoning and Writing. Master in E-learning and social networks. International University of La Rioja.
Fall Semester: Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays 10:00-11:00.
Spring Semester: Thursdays 10:00-11:00.
During this hour, I will be in the office even if no appointment has been previously set. For appointments at other times, send me an email.
My research activity is in the area of computer assisted learning (CAL). The learning process offers countless opportunities to improve its efficiency by means of information technology.
In this area, I am interested in learning analytics and technology enhanced tutoring. The tools in this areas supervise the learning process of a person or a group of people and makes decisions to improve their experience. I am also interested in techniques to improve group based learning a technique with an increasing presence in many contexts, some of them in which technology may improve it significantly.
In my (scarce) spare time, I try to maintain active the blog T2T. Techies meet Teachers where I comment on issues related to the technology and learning.

Most of the final projects that I supervise are developed in the learning management system called .LRN. This platform is open source and it is based on the OpenACS web development toolkit (also open source).
The projects have usually two phases. The first one includes studying the structure of the platform, become familiar with its internal structure to the point of writing a simple and limited functionality application. This phase is suitable to do “technology studies”.
In the second phase, the objective is to develope an application to be included in the official releases of the platform. The main advantage of this platform is its industrial level, to the point that there exist several companies that use it as their basic platform to develop web applications.
If you are interested on doing any type of work in this context, look at the web pages of these tools and get in touch with me to explore possible ideas to pursue.
If you are looking for funding for your final project, consider the possibility of applying for a Beca de excelencia GAST.
Titles of some final degree projects done to date (in Spanish only).
I currently participate in the following research projects:
Adaptation of learning scenarios in the .LRN platform based on Contextualized Attention Metadata (CAM). This project aims to combine semantic web technologies with Contextual Attention Metadata (CAM) to enable personalization and adaptation in Learning Management Systems (LMSs). CAM allows to capture and analyze observations that describe the learner's activities. The semantic web allows the use of extended data from the web, integration with other business processes, rule and data reuse, etc. Using the .LRN as a testbed, which is supported by a very active community of users world-wide, we will conduct several experiments to make improvements in personalization by combining CAM based analysis and recommendation with learning resource descriptions. .LRN enables us to observe learner activities regarding learning resource acquisition, appointment managements, blog and wiki activity, assessment, assignments and evaluation of and within courses. Integrating technology developed at Fraunhofer FIT and Univ. Carlos III, the .LRN environment will be extended with new personalization and adaptation features.
eMadrid: Research and development network about e-learning technologies in the Madrid Region. The eMadrid Network is a project funded by the Government of the Region of Madrid, which promotes research and development of technologies to support learning (Technology-Enhanced Learning). Coordinated by the University Carlos III of Madrid, it has as partners the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and UNED, having other universities and companies as associated entities.
Learn3: As technology advances, new possibilities emerge that can have a profound impact on the learning experience. This project organizes the spectrum of technology-enhanced learning (TeL) along three main lines: Towards 3D Learning, Towards Learning 3.0, Towards 3rd place Learning. The project is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, TIN2008-05163
