18.4.  Group evolution

Based on multiple studies about team work, the evolution of an effective team has the following steps:

  1. Creation. Team members are not yet fully convince that the group is going to work. Mutual trust needs to be fostered in this step, as well as effort convergence (we all have a common goal).

  2. Instability. First conflicts appear among team members. There is a need to advance in the problem resolution and different members have different approaches. Tensions appear and they need to be commented.

  3. Normalization. After the conflicts are solved, cohesion appears among team members. At this point the exchange of ideas, remarks, opinions, etc. is done normally and members feel comfortable when working both with the team and alone.

  4. High performance. Here is where the group is most effective than the sum of its parts. Members work well together, with a high level of trust and confidence, and a good balance between individual and collective work.

  5. Dispersion. When the work is done, the group is dismantled and each member follows a different path. If the group has worked effectively, some nostalgic feelings might appear.
