18.2.  Typical steps in collaborative work

Team work usually follows a cyclic pattern in which the following steps are repeated several times:

  1. Identify the problem. Read the given information carefully. Analyze its content. The goal is not to solve the problem but to detect what is needed, why, which resources are missing, etc. This step can be done individually or in a group.

  2. Exploring the previous knowledge. Before jumping to solve the problem, you need to review the knowledge you have within the group. It is very important that all team members participate in this step. Team members must mention those aspects in which they can contribute, they are familiar with, etc.

  3. Generating the first proposal. From the opinions of all team members, a work plan is agreed. This plan needs to cover deeper aspects of the solution, it must avoid remaining only in the surface of the problem.

  4. Identify the necessary actions and divide the tasks. This is one of the most important steps. These actions probably require you review information sources, talk to the tutor, clarify different problem aspects, etc. As a consequence, the tasks are divided among the team members to be done individually.

  5. Individual work. Done aside from the group. It might require some amount of interaction to clarify certain aspects, although you must try to clarify them in the previous step.

  6. Share your work and integrate it with the rest of the team. Group meeting to comment on the individual solutions with the rest of the members, modify them if needed and integrate them in the common project.

Once finished these steps, you may use the same team meeting to start again the cycle (next problem to solve, explore the previous knowledge, etc.)

These steps are presented as a suggestions, and you do not need to follow them strictly. They are a suggestion to take into account if you see that your team does not performs as it should.
